Ross' Hole - Bitterroot River, near Sula, MT. The party descended to the Bitterroot Valley where they met the friendly Salish Indians at Ross' Hole on September 4, 1805. They questioned the chiefs about the country ahead while smoking the ceremonial pipe and trading for additional horses. After the trade, they had 39 horses and would need them all for the difficult journey ahead.
